Critical Listening #8

  • None of these podcasts have the option of recording nat sound in the field. What types of sound do they use to create a well rounded podcast? Why do they work well (or do they not work well?)
  • Reflect on the episode you liked most, what was it that drew you in? What might you apply to your final audio story?

Telescope used a lot of really well-curated music for the episode I listened to, Tracking the Virus with Alexis Madrigal. They also incorporated some media audio clips to fill out the story and audioscape. How is This Night Different Than All Other Nights? also used music to fill in the gaps for nat sound. I think I prefer the former to the latter because the latter’s music was almost sedating. I liked the concept for HITNDTAON but my attention kept getting pulled away from it. Granted, my attention is something I am struggling with in quarantine so, maybe in a different time it would be able to grab me. But, there is something to be said about optimizing the listening experience for people during this pandemic. As we talked about in class last week, we can’t assume everyone will be interested in the same subjects, so why would we assume that they will have the same attention span and patience for slow pacing? In my final audio story I hope to be able to make the listening experience engaging throughout.
