- Compare and contrast the delivery styles of Everything is Alive and Snap Judgement. Which do you prefer? Why?
- What characteristic (inflection, tone, pacing, etc.) of your preferred delivery would you like to emulate?
I prefer Everything is Alive‘s delivery style, for sure. It’s curated and professional. As much as hearing from people talk candidly about their lives is interesting, the lack of the ability to engage and tell a compelling story puts me off most of the time.
Snap Judgement — A Wives’ Tale
The pauses between clips of the interviewee talking were really well placed and had great “pensive” music playing in the gap. It kind of told you “hey! pay attention again!”
Also the music playing under audio is really spot on in terms of conveying the emotion of speaker or the tone of the story. I want to make my podcasts with this kind of attention to detail….at some point. It is probably a lofty goal for now.
I didn’t really like not knowing where the story was going until halfway through. My mind kept jumping around to “oh well maybe she leaves him” or “oh maybe the wives get more husbands”. And by the time they made the story arc clear I wasn’t as into the story they were selling me.
Everything is Alive — Episode 12: Alligator, Alligator
I love the irreverent tone of this podcast. The commitment of the actor portraying Alligator makes the experience so much richer. It isn’t necessarily about being funny, which is usually what improv is about. It taps into the earnest and true aspects improvisers try to reach. It’s very touching.
The sounds weren’t anything special but they definitely kept the piece more engaging than if there had been no background noise. I thought it was smart to have a phone call with a different interviewee for the same reason.
The pace was a bit slow at times and I think I would like to keep to a pace at a faster clip than this, but still maintaining the quality of performance.
